Post #5 – Prompting with CRAFT: A Simple Structure for Smarter Requests

by Tom McAtee | 4 Aug 2025 | AI in Practice

Struggling to get better answers from AI? Use this five-part structure.

When people say, “ChatGPT gave me a bad answer,” the real issue is usually the prompt.

Better prompts = better responses. But what makes a good prompt?

Try the CRAFT model:

    • C – Context: Set the scene.
“I’m a team leader preparing a difficult conversation.”

    • R – Role: Tell ChatGPT who to be.
      “Act as a leadership coach.”

    • A – Ask: Say exactly what you want.
“Give me three opening lines to begin the conversation respectfully.”

    • F – Format: Set the shape of the output.
      “Respond in dot points.”

    • T – Target audience: Who is this for?
“This is for a mid-level manager with some experience but low confidence.”

Put it all together and your prompt becomes clearer, faster, and more useful.
